Professional Development Workshop Series Presents:

Supporting Early Relational Health in School:

A Parallel Process

Presented by Dr. Corinne Catalino

Early Relational Health is the emotional well-being that develops through positive, everyday connections among young children, their parents and caregivers, and educators. For school psychologists, strengthening these relationships is a preventive, practical way to promote children’s mental health and well-being while supporting families and educators. This workshop connects the Shanker Self-Reg® framework’s five-step process for understanding and responding to stress —helping adults and children return to calm and remain available for engagement and learning—with the Pyramid Model, a multitiered system of support (MTSS) grounded in evidence-based practices for healthy social-emotional development. Participants will apply these frameworks to co-regulation, nurturing and inclusive learning environments, and the prevention of behavioral challenges.

Objectives:

1. Participants will explore self-regulation as the emerging capacity of a child to return to a state of calm after some

disruption or disturbance and the role of a calm adult in co-regulating a child.

2. Participants will review tier 1 and 2 strategies of the Pyramid Model framework to create nurturing, inclusive, and

supportive learning environments while addressing challenging behaviors and promoting positive outcomes for all children.

3. Participants will discuss their role in supporting the early relational health of parents, caregivers, educators, and children.
