Professional Development Workshop Series Presents:

Helping Anxious Youth Return to Learning:

A Partnership between Parents and Schools:

Evidence-based Strategies to Reduce

Anxiety and End School Avoidance

Presented by Dr. Anne-Marie Albano

School avoidance can stem from anxiety, depression, social fears, separation, academic demands, or other distress, disrupting learning, relationships, and healthy development. This workshop presents a developmentally informed CBT model that helps youth gradually face anxiety-provoking situations, build coping skills, and develop greater independence, while guiding parents and schools to support autonomy rather than reinforce avoidance. Participants will learn collaborative strategies to help young people return to school and resume their developmental path toward resilience.

Objectives:

1. Learn to recognize and assess the motivating conditions leading to school avoidance behavior.

2. Recognize the tasks of development necessary for mastery and independence, and the role of anxiety and avoidance in stalling youth development.

3. Learn strategies for parents and schools to foster youth coping skills, independence, and school attendance.
