Although technology and social media use can be positive for youth, problematic media use and cyberbullying can be a concern for many parents, educators, and other professionals working with adolescents. This presentation will provide an overview on technology and social media use among children and teens, with a focus on cyberbullying. Specific strategies and resources will be shared for educators to prevent cyberbullying and promote safe and respectful behavior in online spaces. Based on her co-authored book Cyberbullying: Helping Children Navigate Digital Technology and Social Media, Dr. Nickerson will provide research-based strategies that adults can use to guide children to use technology and social media responsibly and positively, and to prevent and intervene with cyberbullying. Participants will learn to identify signs of problematic social media use and cyberbullying. Resources to promote digital citizenship skills will also be shared.

How to Build Resilience in Your Classrooms and

Increase Student Agency and Well-Being

Dr. Doll and Mr. Lestino will describe use of the ClassMaps Surveys in consultation with teachers and support staff to increase school-based positive mental-health behaviors. In particular, school mental health professionals can use ClassMaps to work in partnerships to strengthen the teacher/staff relationships and support for self-agency within classrooms. The ClassMaps Surveys are central to these partnerships; the surveys provide brief, simple, and easily administered assessments of the six resilience characteristics and can identify which resilience characteristics should be targeted to improve positive classroom behaviors; re-administration of the surveys can evaluate whether strategies to enhance these had been effective. In their simplest use, students in a class complete the anonymous surveys about their experiences in the classroom. Graphs describing survey results are shared with all students in a classroom meeting. Students and their teachers can then discuss the survey results. For example…” Is this that a really true? Why do you think this happens in our class? Is this how we want our class to be? What are some things that we could do to make the class even better?” Participants in today’s program will be given access to ‘five brief’ how to do videos that describe a simple strategy to collect and draft the results, recommendations for structuring a classroom meeting, and additional resources for using ClassMaps consultation..

Objectives:

Attendees will be able to administer the anonymous ClassMaps Surveys to students in a class
Attendees will be able to create graphs representing the survey results
Attendees will be able to use the graphed results to engage students and their teachers in a classroom meeting to collectively plan changes to improve the classroom experience.

The New Jersey Association of School Psychologists (NJASP) is sponsoring a free NASP PREPaRE Workshop I, Third Edition training for a limited number of graduate students (30) currently enrolled in a NJ School Psychology program.

There is a limit of no more than four (3) student members per each NJ school psychology program who can take advantage of this offer. If there are additional students who wish to register from the same NJ school psych program, please contact Dr. Barbara Williams at williamsb@rowan.edu and you will be put on a waiting list and be notified if space becomes available. Enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis.

PREPaRE Workshop 1, Third Edition,
Comprehensive School Safety Planning: Prevention Through Recovery

In this 1-day workshop participants will learn how to establish and sustain comprehensive school safety efforts that attend to both physical and psychological safety. The workshop addresses critical components needed to develop, exercise, and evaluate safety and crisis teams and plans and conduct building vulnerability assessments. The model also integrates school personnel and community provider roles in providing school-based crisis preparedness and response activities. Additional topics addressed also include media/social media, communication, reunification, students with special needs, culture, and memorials. After this workshop, participants will be better prepared to improve their school’s climate, student resilience, and crisis response capabilities of school personnel. With updated research and strategies, this workshop makes a clear connection between ongoing crisis prevention, mitigation, protection, response, and recovery.

Trainers for PREPaRE Workshop I, Third Edition will be Drs. Barbara Bole Williams and Terry Molony who are experienced PREPaRE trainers since 2007.

Cost: Free- The cost of the NASP PREPaRE Workshop I materials for student members will be funded by NJASP. NJASP wishes to offer a benefit to student members who desire to become trained in school safety planning. Therefore, the workshop registration is open to current student members or new student members who pay the NJASP membership fee of $25. NJASP considers this a membership drive and hopes that students will become active members of NJASP.
